Henry vs Dallas, July

As readers know, we often try to find historical precedents for various things Metro. After all, these sixteen seasons are often an exercise of deja vu. Yet tonight, we're guaranteed to see something for the first time -- a single-game playoff opener.

When MLS expanded its playoffs to ten teams, many scoffed. Teams 9 and 10 don't deserve to go to the postseason! Yet here we are, with Metro allowed a second chance only because of that expansion. And, of course, the road will not be easy.

To get to MLS Cup, Metro will have to win at Dallas, then win a two-game series versus league-leading Los Angeles, then beat either Salt Lake or Seattle on the road. And if this potential path through the West seems similar to 2008, think again: back then, Metro only had to beat two teams to make the final. Back then, the West was much weaker than the East. Today? If only that was the case.

Of course, we should take it one game at a time. So, Dallas. One of our only two road wins all year, and the game that helped to turn the season around. No Luke Rodgers, but a healthy lineup otherwise. Titi Henry, finally making a playoff appearance (we're gonna discount last year's pointless cameo). Rafa Marquez, possibly caring? Frank Rost, it's time to justify your acquisition. Joel Lindpere and Dane Richards, we know you'll show up. The defense... watch out those free kicks. Watch out those corners.

Tonight, one game to advance. Let's hope it sets a positive precedent.
